The A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” took flight in 1972 and was designed around its primary armament of the GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon. The GAU-8 fires 30mm x 173mm ammunition which is available in armor piercing (AP) and high explosive (HE) variations for use in accordance with a designated firing mission. Armor piercing rounds are designed with a distinct nose shape which is hardened so that it can withstand the penetration of enemy armor plating. High explosive rounds do not puncture armor as AP rounds do, but they are a more volatile option as they detonate with an explosive velocity upwards of 20,000fps (feet per second). Both rounds are available with incendiary characteristics enabling the Warthog to effectively eliminate tanks and armored vehicles, as well as fortified ground based targets.
